Classic American Apple Pie

Ingredients

For the Pie Crust

• 2 ½ cups (300 g) all-purpose flour
• 1 cup (225 g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
• 1 tbsp sugar
• ½ tsp salt
• 6–8 tbsp ice-cold water

(You may use store-bought pie crust if you prefer.)

For the Apple Filling

• 6 large apples (Granny Smith + Honeycrisp recommended), peeled and sliced
• ½ cup (100 g) white sugar
• ¼ cup (50 g) brown sugar
• 2 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 ½ tbsp cornstarch
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• ¼ tsp nutmeg
• ¼ tsp salt
• 2 tbsp butter (cut into small pieces)

For Brushing

• 1 beaten egg (egg wash)
• 1 tbsp sugar for sprinkling


Instructions

1. Make the Pie Crust

  1. Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.

  2. Add cold butter and rub it into the flour until coarse crumbs form.

  3. Stir in ice water, a little at a time, until the dough comes together.

  4. Divide into two discs, wrap in plastic, and chill for 30 minutes.


2. Make the Apple Filling

  1. In a large bowl, mix:
    – sliced apples
    – white sugar
    – brown sugar
    – lemon juice
    – cornstarch
    – cinnamon
    – nutmeg
    – salt

  2. Toss until apples are fully coated.


3. Assemble the Pie

  1. Roll out the first dough disc and place it into a pie dish.

  2. Add the apple filling.

  3. Scatter the 2 tbsp of butter pieces on top.

  4. Roll out the second disc and lay it over the pie.

  5. Seal the edges and cut 3–4 small slits on top for steam.

  6. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.


4. Bake

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Bake for 20 minutes.

  3. Reduce heat to 350°F (175°C) and bake for another 35–40 minutes until golden brown.


5. Cool & Serve

Let the pie cool for at least 2 hours so the filling can set.
Serve warm — vanilla ice cream is optional but recommended.
