Bioplastic Suncatchers

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar

  • Optional: food coloring, glitter, pressed flowers, or natural dyes

Materials Needed

  • Non-stick surface (silicone mat or parchment paper)

  • Mixing bowl

  • Spoon

  • Saucepan

  • Cookie cutters or stencils (optional, for shaping)

  • Straw (optional, to make hanging holes)

Instructions

Step 1: Mix the Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the water, cornstarch, and vinegar until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.

Step 2: Heat the Mixture

  • Pour the mixture into a saucepan.

  • Cook over low to medium heat, stirring constantly.

  • As it heats, the mixture will begin to thicken and become translucent — this is your bioplastic.

  • Cooking time: about 3–5 minutes.

Step 3: Add Color and Texture

  • Remove from heat.

  • If desired, divide into portions and add food coloring or natural dyes.

  • Stir in glitter, flower petals, or tiny beads for decoration.

Step 4: Shape the Suncatchers

  • Spoon the warm bioplastic onto your non-stick surface.

  • Spread into circles with a spoon or spatula, or pour into cookie cutters for shaped designs.

  • Use a straw to poke a hole near the top for hanging.

Step 5: Drying Time

Let the bioplastic dry at room temperature for 24–48 hours.
Drying time may vary depending on thickness and humidity.

Tips

  • The thinner the layer, the faster it dries and the more translucent it becomes.

  • If edges curl during drying, gently press them flat with a heavy book after they are fully dry.

  • These are not waterproof — keep them indoors or away from rain.

Fun Variations

  • Layer different colors to create a stained-glass effect.

  • Use leaves or lace to make textured impressions.

  • Add essential oils for a scented sun decoration.
