Homemade Maple Donut Bars

Soft, fluffy donut bars with a rich maple glaze β€” sweet, comforting, and better than bakery-style donuts.

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp instant dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) warm milk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • Oil for frying

Maple Glaze

  • 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

1. Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until slightly foamy.
  2. Add the sugar, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Stir in the flour and salt.
  4. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

2. First Rise

  1. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.
  2. Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap.
  3. Let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

3. Shape the Donut Bars

  1. Punch down the dough.
  2. Roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) thick.
  3. Cut into rectangular bars using a knife or pizza cutter.

4. Second Rise

  • Place the bars on a floured baking sheet or parchment paper.
  • Cover lightly and let rise again for 20–30 minutes.

5. Fry the Donuts

  1. Heat oil in a deep pot to 350Β°F (175Β°C).
  2. Fry the donut bars for 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.
  3. Remove and drain on paper towels or a wire rack.

Make the Maple Glaze

  1. In a bowl, whisk together:
    • powdered sugar
    • maple syrup
    • milk
    • vanilla extract
  2. Mix until smooth and glossy.

Glaze the Donut Bars

  • Dip the warm donut bars into the maple glaze.
  • Place on a wire rack.
  • Let the glaze set for 10–15 minutes before serving.

Tips

  • Use real maple syrup for the best flavor.
  • For extra fluffy donuts, refrigerate the dough overnight for a slow rise.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon to the dough for a warm bakery-style taste.

Storage

  • Best enjoyed fresh.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Warm slightly before serving for the softest texture.
